Charleston Barbershop Chorus Tags New Director

The Charleston Barbershop Chorus has started the 2007-08 concert season with a new choral director, David Box, age 43, formerly of Cleveland, OH.

Box has several years’ musical performance experience starting from when he was five years old. He has been involved in numerous organized groups, which include gospel and barbershop quartets, and has been a church Choral Director for 15 years. Box’s nearly 12 years of experience as a barbershopper have included being the Associate Director of the Cascade Chordsmen of Elyria, Ohio and a member of The Alliance Chorus of Columbus, OH, a perennial top ten international finisher. In addition, he is a well-recognized vocal training coach for choruses and quartets. Box has held most of the chapter leadership positions and was a member of the Johnny Appleseed District House of Delegates to round out his understanding of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The Charleston Barbershop Chorus has a membership of approximately 45 male singers who volunteer their time to sing for various charitable and profitable events. New members are always welcome to join. The Chorus rehearses Tuesday evenings at 7:00-9:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Communion, located at 218 Ashley Avenue.

The Chorus now has five quartets that are available for hire at events like picnics, reunions, church gatherings, schools and senior centers. They are best known for delivering Singing Valentines in February. Proceeds from local barbershop events go to benefit the Harmony Foundation, Inc., a fund that gives to special music education projects of the Barbershop Harmony Society including Directors College scholarships, Harmony Explosion Camps and Heritage Hall Museum of Barbershop Harmony. The local chapter also makes sizable donations annually to the Music Therapy Program for Special Needs Children at James Island Elementary School.

The Charleston Barbershop Chorus has several performances already scheduled for the upcoming season.
On December 1, 2 and 4, the Chorus will present its 3rd Annual Charleston Christmas Community Sing at three different locations to be announced soon. Admission will be free, and unwrapped toys will be collected at the door as donations for Toys for Tots.
During the week of Valentine’s Day, Barbershop quartets will be available to deliver Singing Valentines.
And, then in late Spring, it’s the Annual Charleston Barbershop Chorus Show, which will pay tribute to the Broadway musical hit, “The Music Man” and will include an appearance by the North Carolina quartet, Bar None that finished 3rd at the Dixie District 2007 Spring Quartet Competition.
