Charleston’s Own Recognized by Choice Hotels
Sam Agee, Chairman of Gateway Hospitality, was presented with the Harriet Kocher award at Choice Hotels International 53rd annual convention last month. The Harriet Kocher award has been presented for the past 20 years to either a Choice Hotels International employee or a member of the Choice Hotels Owners Council who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Choice system, the community and the overall hotel industry.

Middleton Place Welcomes Wine, Bees and Water Buffaloes
Water Buffaloes Return to Historic Middleton Place. Visitors to Middleton Place National Historic Landmark will now be able to learn how water buffaloes once worked in the rice fields of the 18th century plantation. Two calves have been added to the agricultural animals that add yet another dimension to the historical accuracy of the site. The new water buffaloes, both males, have been given the Turkish names of Adem (“Earth”) and Berk (“Solid”). Visitors can see the newest additions from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.daily. Additionally, wine tasting in the gardens at Middleton Place continues on 20th. For just $5.00 per guest, visitors will experience wine tastings in a different garden location while sampling a variety of summer wines. A Garden Interpreter will be on hand at each event to answer any questions about the garden’s history. Featured wines will be available for purchase at the Middleton Place Restaurant. Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens are Blooming and Bustling
With the opening of a downtown retail shop, Boone Hall on Wentworth provides the only plantation tour available from downtown Charleston. Shuttles to Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens now leave daily from a convenient new location: Intersection of King & Wentworth Streets. Live Theater is also available at Boone Hall. “Exploring the Gullah Culture” and “Life in the South” are available twice a day, Monday – Saturday at no additional charge. Local produce and Lowcountry products abound at Boone Hall Farms, a local roadside market located on Highway 17, across from Boone Hall Plantation. U-Pick fields with in-season produce are open to the public throughout the year. Late May/June – Cucumbers, Squash, Broccoli, Cabbage & Lettuce. June – Corn, Watermelon, Tomatoes, Peppers, Blackberries. Late September – Tomatoes, Broccoli, Cabbage, Collards. Celebrate the end of summer with a bang (and some spice) as Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens celebrates their annual BBQ Cook-Off and Bluegrass Festival. Die-hard BBQ fans will compete for cash, prizes and bragging rights during Labor Day weekend (September 1st and 2nd.). More Fun at the Charleston Museum
The Charleston Museum Summer Family Calendar has been released. Everything from Submarines and Museum Magic with Harry Potter to Crazy Quilts and Crawling Crustaceans, plus much more. And, the extended hours kick in July 5th. Every Thursday night, the exhibits will remain open until 7:30 p.m. The latest exhibition is now on display: Clothes to Dye For: Colorful Textiles from the Charleston Museum Collection. 2007 AVP Charleston Open
This event will mark the AVP's first appearance in Charleston as the world's top beach volleyball stars come to the Family Circle Tennis Center, June 14-17, 2007. Some 24 teams will compete in both men's & women's competition for a total purse of $200,000, awarding each championship team a check for $33,000. All events will be televised on NBC and/or FOX Sports Net (FSN). The 2007 AVP Crocs Tour includes nine new additions - Miami, FL; Dallas, TX; Glendale, AZ; Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Charleston, SC; Long Beach, CA; Boston, MA; and San Francisco, CA. Listen Up – Chazzfest Will Rock Charleston
The Charleston Music & Heritage Festival, better known as ChazzFest, presented by Digital Lifestyle Outfitters, has announced its lineup of world-class American musical artists for 2007. The second annual ChazzFest will be held September 22, 2007, and will feature a diverse schedule of musical genres and artists playing on four stages throughout the grounds of the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island. The Gibbes Has the Goods This Season
Gibbes Museum of Art presents the Rodin Exhibition – Rodin: In His Own Words, Selections from the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation which will run through August 12, 2007. Rodin: In His Own Words features approximately 30 bronzes by Rodin ranging in size from 4 ½ inches tall (Mask of Iris) to more than 7 feet tall and weighing 750 pounds (Claude Lorrain). In addition to the bronzes, the exhibition includes an educational display about the lost-wax casting process, a number of Rodin works on paper and a selection of original letters written by the artist. The exhibition is accompanied by a brochure titled Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession, Sculpture from the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation. Something’s Fishy at the South Carolina Aquarium
The SC Aquarium launched their summertime detective theme, which allows children and adults alike to use their detective skills to uncover mysteries throughout each of the South Carolina regions represented at the Aquarium, from the mountains to the ocean. Guests will have the opportunity to use clues, a scavenger map, a Dorsal Decoder, and the help of the five Something’s Fishy animal characters to learn more about the wonders of the natural world. Turtle Sightings on the Rise
Turtles of all colors and creative whim have taken up residence around Charleston for the new South Carolina Aquarium exhibit, Turtles on the Town. Since May 2007, fiberglass loggerhead sea turtles, transformed by South Carolina artists, have been displayed at locations throughout the community. Modeled after successful community art projects such as Cows on Parade in Chicago, Turtles on the Town will raise funds and awareness for the conservation programs of the South Carolina Aquarium. The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum on USS YORKTOWN has been closed in order to completely renovate and expand the museum. Completion of the $1.5 million dollar project is expected by May 24, 2007, boasting interactive exhibits including replicas of Civil War era weapons, a replica of an actual radar station and a replica of a submarine periscope. It’s Getting Hot in Here
Opening in April, the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center will house the oldest fire trucks in America. Enthusiasts and casual observers alike can learn about fire safety, the history of fire fighting and marvel at the evolution of these amazing vehicles. The innovative museum and the Heritage Corridor Museum will share a roof with the freshly minted North Charleston Visitors Center. The museum features an indoor playground. Even More to See and Do at Drayton Hall
Drayton Hall’s new experiential programs give visitors “hands on” opportunities for learning. Saturday morning activities throughout June, July & August. Thematic stations and demonstrations are included with regular admission. Some titles include: A Day in the Life of a Plantation, The American Revolution: War Comes to Drayton Hall and The Civil War: Soldiers & Civilians. All groups are welcome at Drayton Hall, from school groups, homeschool groups and adult group tours. At Drayton Hall, tours can be customized to fit the group’s interest.
